The Cali Gate

A named commission. The design can be built again — under its name.

The Cali Gate closed square over a slatted cattle guard at the head of a gravel drive, its arched black leaves and two cut medallions standing in front of a cream-sided house with a stone base and bare-limbed trees behind.

Both leaves crest to a shallow arch at the centre over collared balusters, with a framed solid panel along the bottom carrying a row of raised pyramid studs. An oval medallion sits in each leaf beside the joint, cut through with a monogram and a deer's head. Shown in a black finish, hung between square steel posts at the head of a drive.

The arch is what the rest of the gate is built around: the balusters are cut to meet it, so every one of them is a different length, and the collars on them are set to two fixed heights instead of following the curve. Those two lines of collars read as rails that are not there, which keeps a tall opening from looking empty without filling it in.

It shares its vocabulary with The Mayeaux Gate — the same solid studded bottom rail, the same turned balusters — but where the Mayeaux keeps its top rail low and shallow, this one lifts to a crest and hangs a medallion beside the joint, so the entrance carries a mark of its own. In the bronze-brown build the studs catch more light than the ring does; in black, the medallion is the first thing read from down the drive.
