The Katt Gate

A named commission. The design can be built again — under its name.

The Katt Gate closed across an asphalt drive between stone piers carrying copper gas lanterns on their faces, its oval medallions and lettered bottom panel dark against heavy summer trees, with matching picket fence panels running off to each side.

Both leaves rise to a shallow arch that peaks at the centre joint and falls away to the hinge stiles. The picket field is collared — every bar knuckled at two heights, so a pair of banded lines crosses the gate — and an oval medallion cut with a wildlife scene sits on each leaf above a solid bottom panel with serif lettering cut clean through it. Shown in black, and in a warm copper tone on a second build.

The bottom panel is where this design earns its keep: solid plate, set low where a driver’s eye lands, with the lettering cut out of it so daylight does the work paint would have to fake. Above it every picket is collared twice, which lays two horizontal lines across the field without adding a rail, and the oval medallions stand far enough off the bars to throw a shadow back onto them.

Anyone who has named their place should be looking at this one, because the medallion and the letter panel are both cut to order, and the same plate-and-torch work carries on over the drive in the overhead sign shown here. Set beside The Frontier Gate, which cuts its whole picture out of a single sheet, the cut work here is concentrated into two ovals and one line of letters, which leaves the rest of the gate open to the view.
